The Luri Nomads of Iran

(Return to NomadPlace.com HOME PAGE)

The name Luri is used very broadly and is often used incorrectly by non-Iranians.  Here we present 4 main Luri groups.

Group 1: Luri from Luristan province in the center. There is a very good site about them at www.LuriPeople.com

Group 2: Luri from Buyer Ahmad Province in the South. Some of these Luri are called Mamasani. There is a very good site about them at www.everytongue.com/mamasani

Group 3: Bakhtiari in the south who speak a language that some call Luri and is very close to other Luri languages.  We have made a Bakhtiari site at  www.NomadPlace.com\Bakhtiari

Group 4: Laki in the North who are closely related to other Luri.  Many Laki also speak Luri. Some say Laki people are more related to Kurds.

If you have fotos or more information on the Luri please e-mail me at info@nomadplace.com

The person who took these photos gives up rights to them.  You can use them for the positive promotion of nomadic cultures.

Group 3: Bakhtiari in the south who speak a language that some call Luri and is very close to other Luri languages.  We have made a Bakhtiari site at  www.NomadPlace.com\Bakhtiari   Photo: A Bakhtiari family foto taken in the year 2000 near Susa in Iran.  The woman is not wearing traditional tribal dress.  More and more Iranian nomads will live in a black goat hair hand made tent and also use a pre-manufactured canvas tent for storing goods.

Group 4: Laki in the North who are closely related to other Luri.  Many Laki also speak Luri. Some say Laki people are more related to Kurds. We need better fotos.  The family in these fotos are Laki but have learned Luri since it is the trade language where they live.  They speak Laki in thier home and Luri or Farsi out in the city.
